On Monday July 1, 1985 had packed my basic stuff and my parents dropped my off at the train station going to Diez. I had a cheap recycle-beige ticket from the army and was sitting in the train with a bunch of other people, who clearly were going to their first day at the Bundeswehr, too.

I was going to start my basic training “Grundausbildung” in Diez at the river Lahn and my home was going to be the Frontnachrichten Lehrkompanie 300 (Zugfuehrer Leutnant Lehmann, und Gruppe 2 unter Oberfeldwebel Sowa) in the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Kaserne. We were six in the room on the first floor in the second room to the left. Christian Guizetti, Axel Jochem, Joerg Monschau, Christoph Paus, Michael Schleicher, und Markus Wayant.
The trip was scary but not to be shown. Pickup in a bus at the train. And off we go.
