Home Match – Oct 23 – Union Boat Club

The season opener is going to be an interesting match. All of our highest rank players are not available and it is up to Tim (Apratim) to play our number 1. The exact matching is as follows

  1 - Alex McFerran / Apratim Sahay
  2 - Mike McElroy / Frans Kaashoek
  3 - Hunter Nadler / Christoph Paus
  4 - Jeff Carter / Vijaya Kolachalama

If I remember correctly we did win last year against the Union Boat Club. In fact last year we had an excellent start but Justin was more available in the beginning of the season. Let’s see how it goes, at least we should give them a run for their money 😉

Game 1: Alex / Apratim - L(3:0) - 9:7 9:5 9:8
Game 2: Mike / Frans - L(3:0) - 9:4 9:5 9:6
Game 3: Hunter / Christoph - L(3:2) - 9:10 9:6 9:6 3:9 9:2
Game 4: Jeff / Vijaya - L(3:1) - 9:5 5:9 9:4 9:5

The games started with Christoph taking on Hunter. As we thought we only had one court the game had a large number of spectators. After a slow start Christoph pulled through in the first and

Captain of the team (4.5)

Finally the unthankful honor of being the captain of the team has caught up with me….. nobody usually wants to do it and the last years I had such a good excuse with my travel schedule, that finally this year it is on me to organize the matches. Already this week I do not have courts at seven and some improv will be needed to make it work.
Tomorrow we will play against Union Boat Club. I have 4 players but the top players have all pulled out. We should maybe merge the 5.5 and 4.5 teams…..

Home Match versus University Club

Another match coming up and it is a home match. Good for the psychy but of course after a long series of losses a lot of pressure to bring this one finally home. The grapevines say the players are all tough, beyond 4.0 rating and it was not going to be easy, but I was ready, Tuesday I had mostly hit by myself with some few drills…. so best conditions for breaking the bad streak.

I came on time and Ana gave me up to 8:30pm so I should be fine. My opponent though was 20mins late but no problem… Strother (his first name) was early enough to get the match finished. I was off to a good start and I won the first just barely and could also put away the second one. Finally in the third game I lost my concentration a little and lost…. The fourth game was a nail-biter and I had to pull myself together to finally get to a 11:9 win and my first league win in a while. The home court certainly made a difference.

Squash against Concord Acton Tonight

Ready to go to Concord for our match tonight. Met with Tim at the elevator in b24 and walked over to find Ana with the kids already waiting. We dropped them off at home got a fresh pair of shorts for me and were on our way feeding off some rice sticks to pump us up for the match. Gisele and Markus wanted to come so I took them with me to Concord along route 2.
We arrived pretty easily, helped by the GPS in my phone. The games were already on when we arrived. Jan and Craig got beat and soon it was me against Wendy and Tim against …. who was it again. I started well firing away and winning 11:8. Afterwards I was still up by 7:5 or so and a bed ref decision in my humble opinion did not go 8:5 but rather 7:6 and I lost it. The last 2 sets I just could not pull it together and lost 1:3. It was a good match and we played two more games afterwards which I won clearly but too late. You have to win them when it is important.

Squash Match versus Harvard coming up

We will play the ‘havaad’ club of Boston tonight. I am interested to see how the game goes. I am playing on 2…. not my usual spot but I am willing to take the challenge.

35 minutes later: And I got whipped pretty bad. The courts here are slow, my strings were close to breaking, I was not well warmed up….. 🙂

I need to exercise more and play with more different and better players than myself. Physical fitness was clearly not the issue.

Soccer – Football

Played football today, the first time since a longer break (is it 10 years already?).

It was fun and I am not that slow, at least not before I pulled my hamstring….. Will have to take a few days break.
