Art oder Guerillart

Uns’ Ludwig

My Childhood Accounting of the Paus Family Crest
As I have indicated in my last post the Paus family (gt Dickmann) has a family crest. This has been explained to us for the first time by my uncle I seem to recall. My father never mentioned it as much as I can remember. A crest is obviously something super cool, in particular when you are a little kid and I was always quite impressed with it. At the time I wondered, a crest is usually the sign of a noble family, but Paus certainly does not seem to be a noble family name and it is even not a very well known name in Germany. Searching Paus on the internet, the best you can come up with is that it means ‘Papst’ in dutch and there is a well known noble family in Norway called Paus. I do not know but I would assume they have nothing to do with us. Anyway, I am straying because I wanted to talk about my childhood recollections. When I asked my uncle, he never really explained much at a time, maybe he did not really know either but the picture that emerged from the little information is as follows.
The old peasant Paus was ordered by the local noble man to bring beer to the large feast in the castle. There have always been wolfs but with the cold winter and large snowfall they were more aggressive and straying through the region. There had been reports of a particular large lonely wolf. Peasant Paus had a large horse pulling his sled which he used to transport the beer in the bitter cold night, when a huge wolf appeared and started to leap at the horse. He got off the sled and fought the wolf with his bare hands and killed him, strangling the poor beast to death. The noble man was grateful for the delivery of the beverages and the killing of the big bad wolf. The crest was a sign of gratitude.
I cannot possibly believe that story but there must be something to it. Stay tuned, I will with time update the story with better researched facts.

Passion for Früh Kölsch
One of our standard tours in Bonn is the zoo in Cologne, the kids love it. The zoo in Köln, together with its aquarium und terrarium seemed huge to me, when I was a kid, in fact I always thought there could not be a bigger one in the entire world. Today I find them much smaller, but still a quite respectable zoo with lots of animals and nicely displayed. Anyway, this is probably a whole other story, the reason why Ana and I would never miss a tour to Cologne is a visit to the dome and even more importantly to the original Früh Kölsch brewery. If you do not know about Kölsch follow the link and read up on it.
When we stoped at Dom/HBF we exited and there it was the Dom (cathedral) practically right on top of us. We just had to walk around it and follow the place right to the brewery. It is a relatively normal old house but when you enter you realize how huge the place is. It is complicated, has many different small and bigger rooms and has a beautiful basement. The Köbes came by and in the typical Rheinland manner wanted to know what we want… interesting only most Köbes at least at that somewhat quiet hour were not Germans. They had an accent which I could not identify, but they knew the drill and kept the beer coming without much ordering. The 0.2 ‘Stangen’ were nicely cool and the beer was most refreshing. Ana disappeared to the rest rooms only to come back with nice t-shirt for me (red with white rims) ‘Liebe Deine Heimat’ written in white on the chest. Blake liked it so much that I had to put it on him and after fitting it a bit in the back it worked like a long robe for him. He was the attraction of the neighborhood for a few minutes, people even snapped some pictures. We ordered some ‘Schweinebraten’, ‘Salat’, ‘Nudeln mit Hackfleischsosse’ and ‘Fleischkäse’, please check the extensive menu.
After another round of beer we went back — Ana very happily I might add — to catch the train and get back to Bonn.
